HTN Awards 2018 Shortlist Announced!

Following an overwhelming number of entries, our judges have selected the 2018 Health Tech Awards Shortlist!

The HTN Awards 2018 celebrate great technology and innovation across health and care. The winners will be announced across digital channels on 7th November 2018 from 7:00pm. The shortlisted entries are:

Efficiency Savings of the Year

  • Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and Ingenica Solutions: healthcare efficiency doesn’t have to be rocket science. Taunton and Somerset NHS FT implemented Ingenica Solutions’ 360 Inventory management solution; good data now drives all purchasing decisions, enabling effective inventory management and supporting accurate patient level costing.
  • eShare: streamlining board collaboration at leading NHS Trusts. When eShare first created its board portal software, it aimed to improve the decisions being made at the top-level of organisations by reducing the time and workload surrounding meeting preparation.
  • Fylde & Wyre and Blackpool CCG’s: GP mobilisation Project. We were tasked with providing our clinical GP’s real-time, 24/7 and full read/write access to their patients EPR, which in turn would provide more efficient use of GP time and workspace, also allowing for greater utilisation of clinic rooms by providing additional appointments or services.
  • Tameside and Glossop Digital Health Service – Using Digital Technology to deliver place-based care.  (Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (T&GICFT) & Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council (TMBC). To reduce emergency attendances and admissions for older people, and support care homes improve quality by preventing the need for staff to escort patients to hospital, we have developed a Digital Health service.  Supporting personalised care of older people within their own residence, improving care and reducing cost.

Impact of the Year

  • Carnall Farrar: Population Health Management in Kent and Medway. CF has used a population health management based approach in Kent and Medway STP, utilising advanced analytics and patient-level dataset to 1) segment the population, 2) focus on specific population cohorts of need and 3) create a new integrated and holistic care offer to those cohorts.
  • North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust: Reaping the benefits of NHS digital transformation with North Tees and InterSystems. North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust is giving clinicians vital information at the point of care to help save lives and reduce costs with the TrakCare EPR from InterSystems.
  • Salford Standard Implementation with iCAP Audit+ and  Informatica Systems. Salford CCG have developed a practice support and reporting suite to implement the Salford Standard. Using existing data and entry of new data it provides reports on practice performance against the standard locally and CCG wide. The tool has resulted in a 10 fold increase in health checks undertaken.
  • Tovertafel UK: delivering moments of happiness. Uniquely placed to help those with mid-to-late stage dementia, Tovertafel will, in 2018, deliver daily moments of happiness to 5,000 people living with the condition in the UK. With the launch of a buddy program to stimulate intergenerational activity, the Tovertafel is reconnecting local communities with this often overlooked, and growing, corner of society.

Best Use of Data

  • Carnall Farrar: Mental Health Analytics in Wider Devon. Working together, Carnall Farrar and the Wider Devon STP used our unique analytical toolkit to analyse how resource is currently consumed, expose variation in effectiveness and efficiency, and develop a proposition for transforming mental health care in the region.
  • Draper and Dash. At the heart of D&D’s solutions is data. By enabling users to maximise the value of data to improve processes, decision-making and enhance patient care is their mission.
  • NAViGO Health and Social Care CIC: ‘Safety in Sight – Using Data to Improve Patient Safety’. Our Clinicians’ Dashboard is a low-cost innovation for improving patient safety; supporting clinicians with high caseloads; maximising efficiency through smart technology.  It automatically texts when people do not attend appointments (DNA) triggering urgent follow-up; emails a weekly ‘live’ caseload report to Clinicians and helps managers to identify staff who are struggling.

Paperless Project of the Year

  • Lancashire Person Record Exchange Service (LPRES) in partnership with Healthcare Gateway, The Medical Interoperability Gateway (MIG). The LPRES programme enables the sharing of crucial health and social care information sharing via a Health Information Exchange (HIE) platform from Tiani-Spirit UK, supported by the Medical Interoperability Gateway (MIG) and its Document Services functionality.
  • IMMJ Systems and Noble’s hospital Isle of Man: achieves paperless digital milestones. The Isle of Man government has unveiled a new digitisation programme for Noble’s Hospital and the island’s care services designed to increase efficiency and deliver enhanced patient care. Noble’s Hospital is looking to the ‘Digital Future’ programme to remove paper records by the end of 2018.
  • CCube Solutions: Milton Keynes EDRM Project. Milton Keynes Hospital already saves about £1 million per year by installing CCube Solutions’ EDRM software and digitising its entire patients’ records library.
  • Egton and Penrose Surgery. Penrose Surgery, a member of NHS Southwark CCG, is already seeing a positive impact by undergoing digitisation of their Lloyd George records, completed by Egton. Removing the need for paper records has enabled the practice to grow and develop, while helping them to deal with the subsequent pressures on patient flow.

App of the Year

  • Now Healthcare Group: Now Patient.  An app to evolve the way people access healthcare, support the NHS and to change lives.
  • preGPTM: the online consultation service from iPLATO. preGP could save NHSE £2.2Bn by shifting most of the 27% of ‘unnecessary’ GP appointments to more appropriate care including selfcare, pharmacy, nurse and remote consultations.
  • Researchers from King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ have developed an app called QUiPP that could help predict if a woman is going to give birth prematurely. As well as providing support for those who will go in to labour early, for those at risk, the app can also confirm they won’t give birth prematurely, reducing unnecessary treatment and hospital admissions and providing reassurance to mothers-to-be.
  • MySunrise App and Royal Cornwall Hospital. The MySunrise App has gone live, a free resource developed by the Oncology team at Royal Cornwall Hospital to support patients and their families right from diagnosis, providing information specific to their local cancer centre.

Digital at the Point of Care

  • North East London Foundation Trust: Agile Working Programme. Agile Working is seen as a key enabler to improve quality of services and implement a more efficient way of working across the Trust. The adoption of agile working practices and devices in a community setting has allowed NELFT to support the driver of treating patients at home, by enabling HCPs to spend more quality time with patients, improving productivity and staff wellbeing.
  • Spirit Digital, Clinitouch Vie, regaining control through remote monitoring. CliniTouch Vie is an Enabling, Connecting and Empowering digital point-of-care solution reengineering NHS pathways to cope with the growing problem of multi-morbidity, keeping them out of hospital.

  • G-care, Gloucestershire care pathways website: right care, at the right place, at the right time. The G-care website was developed to ensure Gloucestershire clinicians have access to accurate information about a range of conditions and how, when and where to refer for treatment and/or provide self-care or self-management information. G-care collates local care pathways, clinical guidance, referral forms, commissioning policies, patient information and national guidance.
  • Coordinate My Care has helped providers deliver a major impact for thousands of patients. Patients receiving urgent and end of life care set out preferences in digital plans, shared with London’s providers. Results include a huge reduction of patients dying in hospital, more appropriate care and millions of pounds saved.

Innovation of the Year

  • Changing Health provides digital lifestyle change programmes for people with Type 2 diabetes, clinically proven to transform health outcomes.
  • Genmed delivers cost competitive vendor neutral managed services and a shared medical microbiology service run by the two organisations which supports around 700,000 people.
  • preGPTM: the online consultation service from iPLATO. preGP could save NHSE £2.2Bn by shifting most of the 27% of ‘unnecessary’ GP appointments to more appropriate care including selfcare, pharmacy, nurse and remote consultations. preGP will free up significant primary care resources to reduce pressure on urgent care and improve patient satisfaction and health outcomes.

Tech Project of the Year

  • Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Real patient benefits from a full EPR. Since introducing our new EPR, Lorenzo system last year, Papworth digitised over a million clinical documents. Using an electronic system for managing patient care resulted in benefits for staff and patients helping hospital staff make quicker, better-informed decisions about care reducing the amount of time patients spend in hospital.
  • Draper and Dash and Four Seasons Healthcare who have enlisted D&D’s expertise to implement a smoke alarm system, powered by advanced machine learning and predictive analytics, to predict threats across their 250 care homes.
  • Facilitating digital connections for mental health in-patients Fortinet UK. Sheffield Health & Social Care NHS Foundation and Fortinet have pioneered access to protected Wi-Fi for mental health in-patients. Access to free, secure multichannel Wi-Fi protects vulnerable patients from predatory, abusive or coercive internet activity. They are now supporting other mental health Trusts to enable controlled access for patients.

User-led Innovation

  • Patient Tracker, Dr Gurkaran Samra at Blackpool Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Based on the clinical needs of  frontline clinical staff, we developed an in-house digital system which replaced traditional ‘white-boards’ on 38 adult wards capturing the patient journey from the point of referral to discharge, providing real time information to standardise clinical practice and improve efficiency within the organisation.
  • North East London Foundation Trust: Pressure Ulcer Prevention and Technology. In March 2016, NELFT piloted a project to accelerate learning and maintain consistency from investigations around the Serious Incident (SI) Framework (2015) in Pressure Ulcer. To date, 207 episodes of care have been reviewed through the pilot showing a significant reduction in Serious Incident Pressure Ulcers.
  • Ieso Digital Health. Ieso, the UK’s flagship provider and pioneer of evidence-based, digitally-enabled,mental health care was selected by Time to Talk, an NHS IAPT service run by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust to improve access to mental health care and to improve outcomes for patient suffering from anxiety and depression.

Case Study of the Year

  • IMS Maxims Global Digital Exemplar: Taunton and Somerset success signals a blueprint for NHS digitisation. Taunton and Somerset Foundation Trust achieved a significant milestone by deploying UK’s first open source electronic patient record from IMS MAXIMS and has since been named a Global Digital Exemplar for the NHS. Together they are pursuing digital excellence; sharing best practice, delivering better, safer patient care, helping staff achieve greater efficiencies, and enabling better organisational workflows. 
  • Draper and Dash solutions have delivered efficiency savings in 70+ Trusts globally. A noteworthy digital journey, was with GDE; Salford Royal. During their merger with The Pennine Care, D&D supported the Trust in realising efficiency savings, with D&D’s Cancer Waits app and the merging of datasets as the Northern Care Alliance was formed.
